Health Insurance :
Which documents do i need to receive health care in Belgium ? How to subscribe to a medical company ?
- If you are a student from the European Economic Area (EEA), you are always covered by the social security system of your country. Go to the local mutual insurance company with your European health insurance card so you can get vignettes. In case of emergency, you will have to go to the hospital to the relevant department (emergency) with the same card. You can also apply for supplementary insurance through an application form. The contribution is € 13.00/month (rate on 01/01/2020).
You have two options :
- Either you keep all your certificates (including doctor visits, pharmacy receipts, any hospital bills) and you will claim them back when you return to your country of origin.
- Either you subscribe to a Belgian health insurance fund, which will cost you nothing and you will be reimbursed directly here in Belgium.
2. If you are a non-European student or if you are not covered anymore by social security in your country :
- Either you are registered in the Belgian population register (as a resident), in which case you must take out insurance with an insurance company with your identity card and you must subscribe to the additional insurance (AC: assurance complémentaire = complementary insurance, €57 per quarter).
- Either you are not registered in the Belgian population register (as a student), in which case you have to take out insurance with a insurance company with a certificate from the school confirming your registration in a higher education institution. You also need to pay for the ‘assurance obligatoire’ (mandatory insurance) per term in order to be reimbursed by the social security. Depending on your own income, it may cost you nothing. You also have to take out a supplementary insurance with the insurance company, amounting to € 57 per term.
